How to choose the right perfume

How do you choose the perfect perfume? Finding your signature scent is a personal journey. It can be a challenge, but with the right approach, you will find a fragrance that reflects your personality and boosts your confidence.

Here are a few tips to help you choose a new perfume.

 

Know your fragrance family

 

Perfumes are divided into different fragrance families. The four main groups are:

  • Floral: Think of roses, jasmine, lily, and peonies. These are romantic and feminine scents.

  • Woody: Sandalwood, cedarwood, and vetiver give these scents a warm, earthy, and sometimes smoky base. Often chosen for sensual and mysterious perfumes.

  • Oriental: Vanilla, cinnamon, and clove dominate these rich, warm, and often spicy scents.

  • Fresh: Citrus notes such as lemon, bergamot, and mandarin make these scents vibrant and energetic.

 

Understand the fragrance notes

 

A perfume is built from three layers, which together form the fragrance pyramid:

  • Top notes: The first scent you smell. These are volatile and fade within 15 minutes.

  • Heart notes: The core of the perfume. This scent emerges after the top notes have faded and remains present for hours.

  • Base notes: The deepest scents that only emerge after a few hours. They define the fragrance and linger the longest.

 

The test

 

A perfume does not smell the same on everyone; this has to do with your skin type and pH level. Spray the perfume on the inside of your wrist or elbow. Do not rub, as this can break down and distort the scent. Wait at least 30 minutes so that all fragrance notes can develop. Only then will you know if the scent suits you.

Take your time. Do not test more than three scents at once. Your nose gets saturated, and then you can no longer smell the nuances. Sniff your clothing or unroasted coffee beans between tests to neutralize your senses.
